The French language is the first language of people living in France and other former French territories such as Quebec, a Canadian province. To date, French speaking people have already reached its more than 75 million mark and there are still a lot of individuals who are interested in learning and soon speaking the French language.

When a person is doing or learning something for the very first time, there is a certain level of difficulty before familiarity and ease come in the picture. Since the English speakers have gotten used to pronouncing words as they see it, French may become a little strange. But of course, everybody knows that there are specific points of differences between the English and French language.

Modern English is made up of a combination of words, phrases and spellings from four key sources:
Latin, Old English/Middle English, Old Norse and Old French.

Invasion and occupation by the Romans (AD43 – AD410), the Anglo-Saxons (from north-western Europe, AD410 – AD800), the Vikings (800 – 1066) and William the Conqueror’s Normans (1066) all left their mark on Britain and its languages.

In the northern and western extremes of Britain, where these immigrant tribes did not reach, local languages were able to develop relatively uninfluenced. Most notably, these were Cornish, Welsh and Scottish Gaelic.

Our existence is always in relation to something and this “something” must be expressed in the language, as without being conveyed in a language this “something” ceases to exist for us. It can be phrased this way: our life, reality and world exist only in the language.

Something which has not respective word to describe it simply does not exist. A language that has a richer vocabulary will produce a richer reality and vise versa. A word has the power of creation of happiness, on a one hand, but also the power of destruction, on the other hand. Our sages said long time ago that “life and death are determined by the tongue”. The wise men of eastern theories say: “life and death is in awareness”. And what is this consciousness if not an inner conversation (word) regarding (my) self perception.

Words remain the single most important device poets have at their disposal. Without them, we have nothing. With them, we can construct anything. But, word choice is crucial, and it either builds a sturdy bridge, providing the reader with a safe crossing into your world, where they can delight their senses in a transforming poetic experience, or it’s merely scattered pieces of wood that the reader must then attempt to leap between, therefore, being unable to enjoy the ambiance and scenery along the way. If, in your attempt, you throw in what I like to call dead language, you will completely rip your reader out of the scene and into another, thus ruining the experience even further.

One of the easiest ways nowadays to get access to a foreign language is by watching DVDs. Many DVDs have multiple languages and can facilitate a learner in many languages. But is it really a good idea?

Yes and no. One of the positives of course is that you can get to hear the language spoken very naturally. You can hear inflexions, accents and the sounds. This is fine where the version of the language is clear and a standard example, but often films use different dialects or very colloquial language.

Imagine yourself in a beautiful foreign country, where everything is new to you. You walk along the beautiful streets, and you dine at one of its restaurants. The only thing that is bothering you is that you just cannot understand what the locals are talking about. Baffling isn’t it? Despite the wonderful sites of a place, when you do not understand the people around you, you can’t help but feel a little lost. Typically scholastic language instruction consists of classroom endeavors that group together people of various level of aptitude or relatively short term intensive exposure to a language in an immersion setting, like a summer abroad program. Literary translation is the branch of translation that deals with novels, poems, plays, stories, song lyrics etc.
Often regarded as the most free of all translation types, literary translation may also prove to be the most rewarding of these.
The freedom of translating a literary text resides mainly in the possibility to interpret the piece, to use words that are not necessarily the translated counterparts of the original, to manipulate the text in such manner that it observes the style of the author but, most importantly, manages to recreate the atmosphere in a different language.
